On Wednesday, January 20th, we will be making relief maps of some of the landforms we have been studying in social studies.  To do this, I need to have the students make their own clay at home.  Could you please help your child with this project?  Thank you!  If there is a problem, let me know.

This recipe can be made ahead of time and kept in the refriderator.
1 cup water
1 cup flour
½ cup salt
¼ cup corn starch
1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
½ Tablespoon alum (found in the spice aisle of the store)
Mix all ingredients.  Cook over medium heat until the clay thickens.  Remove from pan and knead until smooth.  Store in an airtight container or plastic bag.  DO NOT color the clay.  We will be painting our maps at school.
Thank you,

Mrs. Lucy

  1. Lily came home with her relief map model and explained all of the topographical features to me. She pointed out that in her California coastline the hills were behind the mountain range and the river went from the mountain range to the ocean. The mountains at the coastline (like the ones she saw on the whale watching boat) separated the ocean from the inland. She also talked about her peninsula and island. She gave a good report on topographical features and elements of the project. Michael Ferguson :-) maf2197@gmail.com
